Senator Betsi DeVries
Serving District 18 since 2006
Senator Betsi DeVries had a distinguished twelve-year career on the Manchester Fire Department as the city’s first female firefighter. After her retirement in 2001, Betsi decided to run for Alderman, and has served on the Board of Mayor and Aldermen since 2002.
She was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 2004, where she served until she was elected to State Senate in 2006. Betsi serves as the Chair of the Senate Public & Municipal Affairs Committee; the Vice-Chair of Senate Commerce, Labor, and Consumer Protection Committee; and a member of Senate Executive Departments & Administration Committee.
She received the NH Business and Industry Association’s Legislator of the Year Award in 2008, and the NH Homebuilders Award in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
In addition to her elected positions, Betsi also served on the board of directors of the Heritage United Way, and the Manchester YWCA. She is past president of the Manchester Area League of Women Voters, a member of the Crystal Lake Preservation Association, and a member of the Pine Island Pond Environmental Society.
She lives in South Manchester with her husband Walter Becht, also a retired firefighter. She has two step children and two grandsons.
