CONCORD - Today, Senator David Watters (D-Dover) presented SB 610 to the Senate Transportation Committee. The bill establishes a committee to evaluate the transportation climate initiative framework in reaction to the growing necessity of reducing New Hampshire’s carbon emissions.

After the hearing, Transportation Chair and prime sponsor David Watters (D-Dover) issued the following statement:

“Transportation emissions are responsible for around 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in the mid-Atlantic and northeast. If we are serious about combating climate change, we must move forward with efforts to reduce these emissions. This program will provide substantial future funding to improve vehicle efficiency and reduce New Hampshire drivers’ future costs.

Across the country, states are working in tandem between their transportation and environmental services departments to develop policy and programs to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency. Soon New Hampshire will have an opportunity to join neighboring states to do this work together--now is the time to study the benefits and challenges of possible participation for our public health, our environment, and our economy.”
