Governor Sununu Rejects Protections for Granite State Renters and Homeowners

CONCORD - Today, Governor Sununu vetoed HB 1247 which would have provided modest protections to New Hampshire homeowners and renters after lifting the moratorium on evictions. Preferring to side with large corporate banks, the governor’s veto denies working New Hampshire families financial relief.
After the veto, Senate Majority Leader Dan Feltes (D-Concord) issued the following statement:
“Today, Governor Sununu vetoed legislation that would have prevented Wall Street banks from taking away the homes of New Hampshire folks behind on mortgage payments because of the coronavirus recession. This veto is a slap in the face to the hard working New Hampshire families who have been devastated by this pandemic. Creating a housing fund is fine, but a housing fund is not housing protection. Rather than allowing baseline housing protections to move forward, Governor Sununu once again sided with lobbyists and big banks over families trying to stay in their homes. We have heard throughout this crisis that when the moratoriums were lifted we would face one of the most severe housing crises in our history, and evictions and foreclosures only undermine our economic recovery and drive up property taxes for everyone. Anyone who gets kicked out of their homes in the coming weeks and months now has the governor to thank.”
