CONCORD - Earlier this summer, Governor Sununu vetoed HB 1234, a nonpartisan omnibus bill relative to state and local government administration. Included in HB 1234 was a provision allowing cities with biennial elections to conduct a vote for accepting operation of sports book retail locations by a city at the state primary election. The veto will first be taken up by the House; should it be overturned it will then be sent to the Senate for a vote.

Prime sponsor of the original bill, SB 757, Senator Cindy Rosenwald (D-Nashua) issued the following statement in advance of the House session:

“When Governor Sununu vetoed HB 1234, he turned his back on the city of Nashua. The revenue generated through sports betting would have bolstered our economic development by bringing hundreds of jobs to Nashua and supported our nonprofits who raise funds through charitable gaming. The Governor’s veto of HB 1234 blocked Nashua’s ability to put sportsbooks on our ballot during last week’s primary, delaying the next vote until November 2021 at the earliest - at which point there may not be any licenses left. I am hopeful that the House of Representatives will vote to overturn the Governor’s veto of HB 1234 and allow the nonpartisan legislation contained in the omnibus bill to move forward.”
