CONCORD - Today, HB 1240 was delivered to the Secretary of State. As amended, HB 1240 incorporates text from HB 1599 and HB 1491 as amended by the Senate, updating licensing and policy and fees. It next goes to the governor’s desk where he will have five business days to sign, veto, or allow the bill to become law without his signature.

Senator Martha Hennessey (D-Hanover) and Senator Cindy Rosenwald (D-Nashua) issued the following statements in response:

“The safety of our students is a bipartisan priority,” stated Senator Martha Hennessey (D-Hanover). “For over a year, we have been working as a Legislature to close the ‘Howie Leung Loophole’ and ensure a safe education for our students. Our students should never be subject to inappropriate behavior or sexual assault by the adults responsible for their well-being. HB 1240 as amended closes the loophole used by Howie Leung to abuse his position of authority and creates a funding avenue for domestic violence programs through the incorporated language of HB 1599. I’m grateful for the bipartisan support behind this important issue to give our students and our victim-survivors of domestic and sexual violence the support they deserve and look forward to HB 1240 becoming law.”

Senator Cindy Rosenwald (D-Nashua) added, “HB 1240 includes a critical measure regarding pharmacy licensing fees that will prevent a $700,000 negative budget impact and increase administrative efficiency. I thank my Senate colleagues for their bipartisan work on this issue and I urge the governor to sign this significant cost saving measure into law.”
