Senate Republicans Refuse to Increase Rates Paid to Homeless Shelters

CONCORD – Today, the majority of Senate Republicans voted to table SB 415, Senator Jay Kahn’s (D-Keene) bill to make an appropriation to the Department of Health and Human Services to increase rates paid to homeless shelters.
After the vote, prime sponsor Senator Jay Kahn (D-Keene) issued the following statement:
“We are currently reimbursing at a rate per bed per night that is approximately $8.20. Local shelters report their cost per bed per night is closer to $46. This underfunding of our homeless shelter system is completely unacceptable. It denies them the services necessary to overcome other needs like employment, training, child care, and social service supports. My Republican colleagues’ failure to act on this critical issue shows a moral failure to help those Granite Staters most in need.”
